Just a few hours along one of the main highways of the south of Colombia, two major ecosystems merge into a single magical realm: the green suburbs of Florencia, where nature seems to have concentrated all its charms.
The options to explore the surroundings of the city are varied and include vegetation-covered waterfalls,

amazing canyons, and hidden ponds, as well as a long list of plant and animal species.
Florencia is located where the Andes mountains meet the Amazon plains, and it is an excellent destination if you can’t extend your stay but still want to experience a jungle environment.

On the outskirts of the city, there are numerous natural reserves protecting vast areas of jungle. In these areas, it is possible to practice birdwatching, hiking, and many other outdoor sports and activities.

In this region, the riches are not limited to biology. The indigenous heritage and pre-Hispanic legends shape the folklore of the city, while outside of it, the ancient petroglyphs located in the jungle will transport you back to the times of the original inhabitants.
There is so much to see and do in Florencia that many tourists end up extending their visit longer than planned.

Attractions and Experiences

Cueva de los Guácharos National Park

The oldest national park in Colombia is dedicated to preserving the habitat of these birds, which resemble bats, as they sleep in caves during the day and go out to feed at night. In addition to the guácharo, more than three hundred bird species inhabit the park, including the peculiar Andean cock-of-the-rock.

The terrain is crossed by about twenty-five kilometers of trails through virgin forest, where you can discover waterfalls, caves, and viewpoints.

As a testament to the region’s incredible biodiversity, note that this national park borders two others: Serranía de los Churumbelos to the southwest and Alto Fragua Indi Wasi to the southeast.

Orteguaza River Tour

From Puerto Arango, a short distance from Florencia, ferry excursions depart along the majestic Orteguaza River, which is the main connection between the region’s towns and the Caquetá River. The calm waters of the river create the perfect setting for birdwatching in the riverside trees,

but if you’re looking for a more thrilling experience, the rapids of the northern tributaries of the Orteguaza near Florencia are excellent for rafting. This activity often includes stops where you can admire ancient cave paintings in the area’s caverns.
